Gears of War 5: The last time we were updated about the situation on Sera was not too long ago. Gears of War 4, the fourth main installment and the fifth overall installment i.e. the Gears of War 5 in the acclaimed series, was released in October 2016. And here we are already contemplating about what the future holds for the franchise. While Gears of War 4 was well received by most camps, it did not quite live up to fans’ expectations. Not that the new game failed to deliver a great playing experience, but it kind of stuck to most of the basics of the previous Gears of War games.
Gears of War 4 was developed by The Coalition, a subsidiary of Microsoft Studios after the publishers acquired the rights to the franchise from Epic Games, the original developers. A lot was expected as a result of this change of hands, and the game did not disappoint on most counts. But perhaps we wanted a different perspective, or a different story altogether so that the new game would not feel too repetitive in how it would play out. On that count, Gears of War 4 was just another Gears game. We understand that the new entry needed to stick to the aesthetics established by the original devs in order to be faithful to fans. But a few well thought out changes could have made Gears of War 4 a huge standout.
Thankfully, though, there is always a new game to look forward to, and that’s why we’re here to speculate about all that could make Gears of War 5 a really good game.
Will there be a Gears of War 5?
We don’t know if the next Gears game will be called Gears of War 5, but we’re pretty sure that the series has not reached its conclusion with Gears of War 4. In an interview with Digital Spy, The Coalition Studio head Rod Ferguson let us in on how they are approaching the series, now that Microsoft owns the rights to it.
“One of the things that’s nice about Microsoft’s investment is that we know, unless this does horribly, we’re probably going to do another one. That’s made it easier to design moving forward. In the past, when we were doing Gears 1, Gears 2 and Gears 3, there was a lot of doubt, we didn’t know whether there would be another one, so we just had to get everything in right now. Here, we’re able to look at it, recognise a great idea that doesn’t quite fit right now, but it’ll fit in the next one.”
Judging by what he said, it sounds like the devs have plenty of ideas to cultivate for the series, and even if all of them cannot be accommodated into one game, we can always look forward to the next one. So while we don’t know how long the franchise will extend, it certainly looks like Gears of War 5 is on the horizon.
Gears of War 5 Features Wishlist
If the developers decide to keep up with the normal flow of the series, then we can expect Gears of War 5 to be set on the planet Sera. The previous entry was set some years after the Imulsion Countermeasure weapon had set off a massive impact on the planet’s resources. Not only did it seemingly eliminate the enemy, but it also wiped out most of the means of survival for the handful of humanity that still remained. Besides the intriguing storyline, Gears of War 4 also introduced a new enemy. But while we liked the storyline, we don’t have much to say about the ones we had to fight.
How About a New Setting for Gears of War 5?
One of the many things that the creators could consider for Gears of War 5 is a new setting. Going by the present condition of Sera, it would be safe to say that the planet has come pretty close to becoming uninhabitable in the near future. It would be great if Gears of War 5 focused on the survivors trying to find a new suitable planet for survival. That would, in turn, open up endless possibilities in terms of the storyline.
New planets mean new enemies to fight, and by “new” we mean moving away from the general norm seen in the rest of the games. While Gears of War 4 certainly had a lot of action to satisfy hardcore Gears fans, a new kind of adversary could do a lot more than just fight and kill mindlessly. Mind control, anyone?
Not only will that bring a totally different turn in terms of the story, there could be some massive changes brought into the upcoming title’s gameplay. If the enemy we have to face in Gears of War 5 fights rough both from the outside and the inside, then we could have whole new tools and fighting mechanisms to aid us in winning the fight.
Go to the Beginnings
Another possibility that the makers may want to explore is to make something of a pre-sequel with Gears of War 5 (something that Rockstar is rumored to be doing with Red Dead Redemption 2). That could give us a whole new perspective of the beginnings of the struggle by taking us back to the fateful E-Day, before the Delta Team was formed. This would mark a compelling change, as it would open up a window of opportunity to introduce a whole new set of characters. Granted, the Delta Squad comprising of Dom, Cole, Baird and Marcus, is an integral part of the story, but a little change to shake things up a bit won’t harm Gears of War 5. In fact, we think if ever there is a Gears 6, we would be more than happy to welcome them back. For now, though, a break won’t be a bad idea.
To conclude our flight of fantasy about Gears of War 5, we don’t actually expect Microsoft to implement such radical changes to the game’s foundations. But we can certainly ask for some tweaks in the gameplay mechanics and weapons. Surely, it was time we saw some new heavy duty elements make an appearance alongside the classics.
Gears of War 5 Gameplay Wishlist
There are two distinct ways that the gameplay in the next entry could go in. It could either take a complete departure if the creators really want to shake things up in terms of the story like we have said above, or it could largely stick to the same pattern, but come with some notable new features and improvements. Chances are that we’ll get the second kind, and while we won’t complain if it’s as gritty and hardcore as Gears of War 4, there is one aspect where we would like to see an overhaul.
We’re talking about the campaign here, and if you’re a Gears fan, you already know how Gears of War 4‘s single player compares with that of its predecessors. So for Gears of War 5, we hope the creators try to flesh out a more immersive story and better character traits that will take us back to the standards that the series had set prior to 2016’s entry. We’ll add more stuff to this section as we come up with them, but feel free to tell us what you would like to see.
Gears of War 5 Trailer
The fact that we only saw Gears of War 4 hit the market in October makes us assume that it will be some time before we see a trailer for the next game. We hope to hear an announcement about Gears of War 5 by 2017, so perhaps we’ll have a trailer ready for you then.
Gears of War 5 System Requirements
Now that the ball is in Microsoft’s court, we expect Gears of War 5 to come with some significant technical upgrades. Quite naturally, these will require an updated PC to run smoothly and in its best capacity. The specs below will be updated once the devs let out the official details. If Microsoft really wants to do Gears of War 5, we don’t think they will unnecessarily delay its development. The post-release content handling for Gears 4 could take a few more months before the company can actually really begin their work on Gears of War 5. If work begins sometime in 2017, there’s a pretty solid chance of us seeing the game by 2019. Coming to the question of platforms, until recently, the Gears series has always been an Xbox exclusive. But after Gears 4 released on the Windows PC, we’re certain that Gears of War 5 will also come on both the PC and Xbox One.
In conclusion, all we can say is that whatever Microsoft decides to do with Gears of War 5, the game will be pretty big. Now that the company holds the exclusive rights to the series, perhaps they’ll take it someplace it has never been before. What are your thoughts? Let us know. And while you wait for updates about the next Gears title, you can read all about us speculating over TES 6.
