Hideo Kojima’s departure from Konami was an ugly affair that was heavily covered by the media, but that has not refrained Konami from furthering the Metal Gear franchise. The Japanese entertainment company today announced Metal Gear Survive, a four-player stealth “co-op survival game” set within the Metal Gear universe, which will be the first title in the franchise to appear since Kojima.
Gamescom 2016 saw the release of the first trailer of the Metal Gear Survive. The new game’s events follow directly after Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, and players will find surviving soldiers from the mercenary corporation Militaires Sans Frontières of the previous title transported through wormholes into an alternate universe, where they will be forced to combat a force comprising of crystalline zombies, and quite possibly, at least one Metal Gear.
According to the official statement released by the game’s makers, “Metal Gear Survive continues the pedigree of Metal Gear Solid V’s highly praised gameplay design, with a unique blend of stealth and co-op play mechanics. Players can strategically manage massive threats with the help of 4-player online cooperative play. New weaponry will also be introduced to combat charging creatures and lethal environments as well.”
The game’s trailer looks promising, but it is yet unclear as to how much of Kojima’s footprints the new game will bear. The trailer suggests that the game will involve scavenging for resources from the devastated Mother Base, parts of which have been sucked through and scattered out of the wormholes that transported the game’s central characters. As the developers have put it, “Players (will) find themselves on distorted desert landscape full of massive half-formed structures, living biological threats, and the remains of a once strong military force now litter the landscape”. Some of the said “biological threats” are seen in the trailer in the form of enemies that resemble zombies.
Though the trailer features some recognisable characters from the game’s former titles, it is uncertain if any of them will make any appearance in the core game. But Konami makes it clear that the upcoming game will be “a new addition to the Metal Gear Solid V experience”.
While further details are not known about the Metal Gear Survive, the makers have promised to disclose new information at Gamescom. Metal Gear Survive is due for release in 2017 on the Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
